Sprinting in My Knickers: Why We Repeat the Same Habits (Even When We Know Better)
Why do we keep repeating behaviours we know aren't serving us? Whether it's reaching for the biscuits when we're stressed, procrastinating over important tasks, or reacting the same way in difficult situations, our subconscious mind loves familiar pathways. Surprisingly, it took one spectacular encounter to help me understand why.
Picture this: me, in my knickers, being pursued across the lawn by what can only be described as a squadron of airborne psychopaths. I was shrieking at the top of my lungs while a particularly bad-tempered swarm of wasps chased me down. I'd made the fatal mistake of disturbing their nest, and they were relentless. Every sting produced another yelp, every yelp made me flap harder, and with absolutely no dignity left, I finally burst into the safety of the house, where I spent the next three days in considerable agony feeling extremely sorry for myself.
We called in a pest controller. As he treated the area, he explained something that stuck with me. The powder he used would remain active for months because even when wasps were away from the nest during treatment, they would blindly follow the exact same flight path back home. Guided by chemical signals and instinct, they'd continue flying the familiar route even when that route had become lethal.
As it turns out, we humans aren't all that different driven by invisible neural pathways and deeply ingrained subconscious habits.
Why the Subconscious Mind Reacts Faster Than Conscious Thought
Years ago, I had a dishwasher with a faulty electrical ground. Every time I touched the metal interior while my hands were wet, I got a sharp, nasty shock. We replaced the appliance. But today, twelve years later, I still physically hesitate to touch the inside of my perfectly safe dishwasher.
Intellectually, I know there is no danger. Scientifically, I know the old machine is long gone. Yet my subconscious sees the dishwasher, panics and instantly routes me down the old path:
Danger. Pain. Abort mission!
Result? Me, hovering suspiciously over an entirely innocent dishwasher like it's plotting my demise.
The funniest thing about the subconscious is just how absurdly fast it operates. Your conscious mind is like a slow, thoughtful turtle weighing up the pros and cons. The subconscious, meanwhile, is an overly dramatic bodyguard operating at warp speed. By the time your logical brain has found its glasses, made a cup of tea and suggested everyone stay calm, your subconscious has already pulled the emergency stop, evacuated the building and filed the incident report.
It does this because the brain tries to conserve energy and creates automated shortcuts. Whenever we experience physical pain, emotional stress or a quick hit of pleasure, the brain writes a rapid background script:
"When X happens, do Y immediately. Don't ask questions. Just react."
Neuroscientists describe these shortcuts as neural pathways, connections that strengthen every time we repeat a thought, emotion or behaviour. The more often we travel the same mental road, the easier it becomes for the brain to follow it automatically.
Throughout our lives, we build thousands of these automatic pathways. We learn ways of responding, ways of protecting ourselves and ways of interpreting the world. Some continue to serve us well. Others quietly dictate our actions long after they've stopped being useful. Yet our overzealous inner bodyguard keeps enforcing them anyway.
How Subconscious Habits Become Automatic
These subconscious scripts are usually driven by two simple instincts: avoiding pain and seeking comfort.
The trouble is, the bodyguard doesn't check the calendar. It simply executes yesterday's rule, completely oblivious to the fact that today's circumstances have changed.
It also has a remarkable talent for hijacking our best intentions.
Imagine you've decided to lose a few kilos. Monday morning arrives with an enthusiastic "I've got this!" You promise yourself you won't touch the cake sitting in the staff kitchen. But by three o'clock, when stress hits, your subconscious couldn't care less about your summer wardrobe goals. It sees cake, remembers Cake = Instant Happiness, and practically teleports you across the room.
Five minutes later you're standing there with a plate in your hand wondering, ‘How did I get here?’
Or perhaps you've wandered into the kitchen for a glass of water and somehow found yourself staring blankly into the fridge. Maybe you pick up your phone without thinking, put off making that difficult phone call, apologise when you've done nothing wrong or snap at someone you love after a stressful day.
It isn't a lack of willpower. It's a well-worn mental groove executing at lightning speed.
The old pathway is a six-lane motorway. The new, healthier pathway is still little more than a muddy footpath.
How to Rewire Old Neural Pathways
A wasp following its familiar flight path isn't being foolish. It isn't evaluating the situation at all. It's simply following the only route it has ever known.
In much the same way, my hand hovering nervously over a brand-new, perfectly grounded dishwasher is simply an old protective algorithm running on outdated software.
The difference between us and the wasps, however, is that we can catch our inner bodyguard in the act. We can choose a different route. We can rewrite the code.
These days, when I unload the dishwasher, I deliberately touch the metal inside. I do it to prove to my brain that I am safe, forcing it to overwrite that twelve-year-old shock memory. It takes time. Building a new neural pathway requires conscious repetition. But slowly and surely, the old panic response is growing fainter.
Thankfully, our brains remain remarkably adaptable. Thanks to neuroplasticity, new neural pathways can be formed throughout life. Every time we consciously choose a different response, we strengthen the new route while allowing the old one to grow a little weaker. Every repetition lays another paving stone on the new road until, eventually, it becomes the brain's preferred route.
Perhaps that's the most hopeful part of all.
The wasps never had a choice. They were programmed to follow the same flight path until it killed them.
Thankfully, we do.
Unlike the wasps, we're not condemned to follow the same route forever. Every conscious choice is another step away from an outdated map and towards a new one. It isn't always easy, or instant, but our brains are wonderfully capable of learning a different way home.
